2001 Oldsmob Aur has recently had new transmission as the speedo stopped working in heavy rain. A few months after new transmission it is happening again. Should there be a guard protecting the workings under the wheel arch? I see the paint is only so far down under the wheel arch which is why I'm querying this. It looks like something may be missing.

Your speedometer plugs right into your tranny. The retainer clip might be broken.
