Actually, the aurora does not start at the surface of the sun. What you have is the sun sending out lots of energetic particles in what is called the solar wind. The sun puts out more during storms, when the sun cycle is at maximum -- which is linked with a maximum of sun spots.
The ionized particles stream in all directions, and some will be trapped by the magnetic filed of the Earth, and will be funneled towards the pole, where the magnetic field lines converge towards the ground. Those energetic particles then hit the molecules of the upper atmosphere and excite them, in a process similar to one taking place in a neon tube. And you have a glow.
