Aluminum rim substitution?

my son's old's aurora 1996 has al rims, the rims are pitted and will not hold air. I want to buy steel rims but none seem to fit, the bolt pattern is fine but the rim hits the stterring arm or the calipers.

does anyone know of a rim, from which make and model , will fit.?

The Tire Rack (www.tirerack.com) sells a plain black steel wheel for this application for $48 each. You can find them on their web site by selecting Winter Tire/Wheel Packages, inputting the vehicle data, selecting "Build Your Own Package" then going to "Skip to Wheels".

Or you could just call and order them because nobody else is going to have them and certainly not that cheap.

Of course the downside of steel wheels is they are ugly. You can get nice shiny new un-corroded alloy's from the same place from $91 each, which ain't bad.

If you live in a climate that see's real winter the steelies might be a good option to use just during the slippery months, preferably with a dedicated set of winter tires. This is what I do with my vehicle. In the spring I switch back to alloys with summer-only ultra-high performance tires.

PS

To postpone if not eliminate the chance of pitting I do recommend inflating tires on alloy wheels with nitrogen instead of just normal compressed air. This takes all the moisture out of the tire and wheel assembly. This moisture promotes corrosion.

Contact a salvage yard to see if they have another set of aluminum rims like the ones that came on the car in the first place. This would be your least expensive option.

You could also go to any good tire shop and tell them what you want. They will be able to get you a rim of the proper size and backspacing.
Take the tire size from the tires, like 275/ 65r / 15, or whatever is stamped on the tire sidewall and go to a tire store. They can sell you correct rims.
